The next big statewide race in
Louisiana
will be the 2010 U.S. Senate race.Due to his involvement in the D.C.
Madam scandal, GOP incumbent David Vitter is considered vulnerable and
is expected to face a challenge from the Democratic Party. In 2010,
Republicans will have to defend 18 Senate seats, while Democrats will
only need to defend 15 incumbents.
Many leading LouisianaDemocrats are encouraging U.S.
Congressman Charlie Melancon (D-Napoleonville)to enter the race. If he
ran, Melancon would have to vacate a safe House seatand forfeit his
growing power in the lower house, so he is not a definitecandidate.
Other Democrats mentioned as potential candidates include
JeffersonParish District Attorney Paul Connick and Shaw Group CEO Jim
Bernhard. Vitteralso may face a challenge from within his own party.
Republican Secretary of State Jay Dardenne is being encouraged to run by
some GOP officials who areconcerned about Vitter’s baggage. To help
Vitter maintain support within theGOP, Louisiana Governor and
Republican superstar Bobby Jindal is hosting afundraiser for the
Senator in
Washington
D.C.
in December.
This week, blogger Joshua Delano, the Treasurer of the
Louisiana Coastal Preservation PAC,announced his interest in the race,
noting that he was “tinkering with the ideaof running as an
Independent.” Although he admitted a “serious sin” for hisinvolvement
in the call girl ring, Vitter still enjoys decent statewide voter
approvalratings and will not be easy to defeat. |
