Once Derrick Shepherd agreed to plead guilty for conspiracy to commit money laundering, he resigned his State Senate seat. In the December 6 race to replace Shepherd, State Representative J.P. Morrell (D-New Orleans) has picked up most of the key endorsements and enjoys the support of the political establishment.
The odds do not deter his opponent, financial consultant Shawn Barney, who is making his third attempt for the position. In 2007, Shepherd defeated Barney by a comfortable 61-39% margin. In this race, Barney is pledging to reject any legislative pay raises before the next election. In the last legislative session, Morrell voted for the controversial legislative pay raises that were eventually vetoed by Governor Jindal. |
