In a move that shocked the political world, Public Service Commissioner Jay Blossman (R-Mandeville) decided to withdraw as a candidate. He was running for his third term on the PSC, but was viewed as vulnerable. In recent months, critics have raised concerns about letters Blossman sent to vendors touting the services of his friend. These efforts were viewed as not only inappropriate, but possibly in violation of ethics laws. With Blossman bowing out, the race will be wide open. The candidates include former State Representative Ken Odinet of St. Bernard Parish has shown an ability to win elections. Last fall, Odinet also ran a very competitive legislative race, losing a close election to State Senator A.G. Crowe. Metairie businessman Eric Skrmetta will have the largest war chest and is well know due to his past campaigns for office in Jefferson Parish. Former PSC member John Schwegmann will have the highest name recognition. Schwegmann, who is now running as an Independent, lost the last two races to Blossman. However, Schwegmann did receive a significant boost when he received the coveted endorsement of the Alliance for Good Government. |
