In the 2nd Congressional District, Republican candidate Joseph Cao is picking up more support in his underdog campaign to unseat incumbent Democrat Bill Jefferson. According to Cao Campaign Finance Chairman Murray Nelson, Cao is being helped by the National Republican Congressional Committee. “The NRCC has jumped into the race. Money will start flowing into the campaign next week,” said Nelson.
Cao has scheduled fundraisers for November 18 and 19 and has already raised enough money for two large billboards. Nelson said the campaign will bring on a well known media consultant and will launch a full scale advertising campaign prior to the December 6 election. In addition, Nelson noted that Cao is being helped by some of the key volunteers who worked in the Helena Moreno campaign. Moreno lost to Jefferson 57-43% in the Democratic Party run-off election on November 4. The general election will likely result in a very low voter turnout because only one other race will be on the ballot and it is scheduled right in the middle of the holiday season.
