After first floating the idea that he wanted a fourth term, St. Tammany Parish President Kevin Davis changed course this week and announced he will not seek four more years in office. In the Home Rule Charter there is a three consecutive term limit for the office of Parish President. Davis had wanted to seek an exemption and amendment to the charter to run for a fourth term. While his current term does not end for three more years, Davis said he needed more time in office to oversee the completion of many ongoing projects in St. Tammany Parish. In 2007, St. Tammany Parish voters re-elected Davis, but also overwhelmingly approved the creation of a three term limit for the office of Parish President. If Davis had persisted in pursuing an exemption to the charter, most political analysts viewed it as an uphill fight with the voters. In fact, the initial public response, via talk radio and Internet blogs, to the idea of a fourth term for Davis was quite negative. No doubt the public's response was a factor in the President's decision to forgo the term limit exemption. With Davis no longer a candidate, the political door is now open for other candidates to seek the office. One potential candidate is Pat Brister, former Chairwoman of the Louisiana Republican Party and past member of the St. Tammany Parish Council. Last year, it was presumed that Mandeville Mayor Eddie Price would run for Parish President as well; however, with all of the controversy swirling around his activities in office, it is highly doubtful that Price would be a serious candidate for the position. |
