In the race for U.S. Senate,
incumbent David Vitter is the first candidate to hit the airwaves. The radio commercials
started last week and focus on Vitter’s accomplishments, while blasting his
major opponent, U.S. Congressman Charlie Melancon (D-Napoleonville). Vitter has
a massive campaign war chest of $5.5 million and will have the financial
advantage over all of his opponents. He faces two opponents in the GOP primary
set for Saturday August 28. His major GOP opponent, former Supreme Court
Justice Chet Traylor is raising money and getting ready to launch his media
campaign next week. The latest polls show Vitter ahead of his opponents,
although a survey conducted by the Melancon campaign indicates the lead is only
one point, 44-43 percent. Most other polls have Vitter with a double digit
lead.
