Real estate agent Gary Johnson is
the latest candidate in the race for the second congressional district seat
this fall. Incumbent U.S. Congressman Joseph Cao (R-New Orleans) will face an
uphill fight to retain his seat. Cao is a Republican in a district that is
predominantly Democratic. Cao has been trying to carve out a moderate voting
record in Congress and support President Obama on certain key issues such as
the healthcare plan. However, after being the only Republican to vote for the
healthcare bill, Cao saw a significant decline in contributions from reliable
GOP donors. Johnson is a Democrat who worked on Capitol Hill as a staffer on
the House Rules Committee. On his website, Johnson notes that his work was critical
“to the development and passage of President Obama’s economic stimulus package,
bills extending unemployment benefits and the recent health care reform
package.” He is a graduate of St. Augustine
High SchoolMorehouse College.
Other candidates in the 2nd Congressional District race include
State Representative Juan LaFonta (D-New Orleans) and State Representative
Cedric Richmond (D-New Orleans). and
